What's on in Bath, and where your group can stay

Visiting Bath: FAQs

Visiting Bath for an event, answered plainly.

Getting here

How do we get to Bath?

Bath Spa station has direct trains from London Paddington in around ninety minutes and from Bristol Temple Meads in about fifteen. By road the city sits just south of the M4 at junction 18. Bristol Airport is the nearest airport.

Should we drive into the city?

Generally no. Parking is limited and expensive, there is a congestion charge zone affecting older vehicles, and event days bring road closures. Park and ride works well.

Is Bath walkable?

Very. The centre is compact and most of what you would come to see is within fifteen minutes on foot. It is also hilly in places, which is worth knowing in advance.

Events

Why do you not list dates?

Because they move every year and an out-of-date date is worse than none. Each page says roughly when an event falls and points you at the organiser for the exact dates.

When is Bath busiest?

Christmas market weekends from late November to mid-December, Bath Half weekend in spring, and August. Book early or choose another weekend.

When is the best time to visit?

September is hard to beat – the weather often holds, the summer crowds have gone and the Jane Austen Festival is on. January and February are the quietest and the best value.

Staying as a group

Can we all stay in one place?

Not easily inside Bath – the centre is protected Georgian architecture with few large buildings. Above about fourteen people, a house outside the city is the usual answer.

How big do the houses get?

From fourteen guests to thirty-six. Every one has a hot tub; eleven have a heated swimming pool.

How far ahead should we book?

Six to nine months for summer weekends and anything near the Christmas market. Midweek and winter dates are far easier.

Do the houses allow parties?

It varies by property and it is the first thing to confirm. Some are set up for a celebration; others are in villages with firm rules on noise and hours.

Coming as a group?

Bath fills up fast around its big events. The houses nearby sleep fourteen to thirty-six, and every one has a hot tub.
